I also am not clear whether he did not realize he missed the exit, until he was already 50-60 miles further South, Or, he realized he missed the planned road, and then decided to take the second road that came up that goes towards the Coast - which is the "Gray Road" Forest Road 23.
The whole point being is, ONE SHOULD NEVER TAKE A MINOR ROAD IN WINTER where it has snow and sleek, at high altitude. It is just plain common sense.
To travel in the treacherous Pacific NW mountain roads in Winter, with a 4 year old and a 6 month old baby is downright stupid. I am sorry but this is a tragedy that can totally be avoidable with the slightest common sense.
We did that all the time. :) though sometimes wont work.
