It supplies the glass materials for the LCD screen. It's a big difference from the panel makers themselves. Currently, there are lots of panel makers, but very few glass suppliers, and GLW is absolutely dominating in its market.
Their recent ER shows that both revenue and earning growths for its LCD segment are ACCELERATING.
I also think LCDs will eventually beat up Plasmas. Why? Here are the reasons:
1. Plasmas bring far less margins to the retailers so don't expect lots of mark-downs.
2. Plasmas are TOO EXPENSIVE.
3. LCD technologies are catching up much faster. 42" LCDs are already available.
4. LCDs are getting chearper much faster than Plasmas, and NEVER underestimate the power of cheap prices. (See the example of PCs vs Macs in the 80s)
5. Because LCDs are growing much faster than Plasmas, it attracts attention and INVESTMENTS. Therefore, LCD's R&D community is much larger than Plasma's and will catch up to Plasma's quality sooner or later. (See the example of PCs vs Macs in the 80s/90s)
