由校训(motto)看学校

校训大多数是拉丁文，体现了学校精神和风格

有些是有宗教色彩的像普林斯顿和布朗，MIT的最实在（动脑动手），Stanford的最自由，哈佛和耶鲁的最精英要真理，芝大的算比较平衡有内涵（益智厚生），CalTech和JHU 的校训一样，一个是英文一个是拉丁文，康奈尔的校训只是创办者的一句话

普林斯顿大学校训：Dei sub numine viget—她因上帝的力量而繁荣（Under God's power she flourishes）
哈佛大学校训： Veritas—真理（Truth)
耶鲁大学校训：Lux et Veritas—光明与真理（Light and truth）
芝加哥大学校训：Crescat scientia; vita excolatur—益智厚生（let knowledge grow, let life be enriched）
斯坦福大学校训：Die Luft der Freiheit weht—自由之风永吹（the wind of freedom blows）
哥伦比亚大学 In lumine Tuo videbimus lumen -- 借汝之光,得见光明 (In Thy light shall we see light)
麻省理工学院校训：Mens et Manus—既学会动脑,又学会动手(Mind and Hand)
加州理工学院校训：The truth shall make you free—真理使人自由
杜克大学 Eruditio et Religio -- 博雅和虔诚
宾夕法尼亚大学 Leges sine moribus vanae -- 法无德不立
约翰霍普金斯大学 Veritas vos liberabit -- 真理使人自由
布朗大学 In deo speramus -- 我们信仰上帝
达特茅斯 Vox clamantis in deserto -- 广漠大地上的呼唤
康奈尔大学 I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study – Ezra Cornell 1865  让任何人都能在这里学到想学的科目
加州大学(伯克利,洛杉矶）校训：Fiat Lux—愿知识之光普照大地（let there be light）

牛津大学校训：Dominus illuminatio mea—上主是我的光 (The Lord is my light)
剑桥大学校训：Hinc lucem et pocula sacra—求知学习的理想之地（Here light and sacred draughts）
帝国理工学院校训：Scientia imperii decus et tutamen—科学是帝国的光彩和守护者（Science is the adornment and safeguard of the Empire ）
