评海外逸士关于写作与翻译的观点

 

前几天家里很忙，今天有点空，写几句。

海外逸士前一阵子说，汉译英要先学好英语写作（大意），言下之意就是，英语没写好，就不要翻译。我们姑且不论这句话是否符合辩证法，因为海外逸士本人也作过一些汉英的翻译，我们来看看他的英语写作是怎么一会事。为了公平起见，我们把它在网上发表的“KungFu Masters”Prologue的第一段拿出来点评一下，因为一般来说第一段都是用心写出来的。

第一段：

It was pitch dark, ink dark, coal dark, a night without the moon--the fluorescent lamp of the sky—not even the stars, the blinking eyes of Heaven. The overcast sky threatened with a heavy downpour. The sullen weather sometimes seemed very friendly to certain individuals whose job was outside the law.

点评：

全段共三句，第一句：It was pitch dark, ink dark, coal dark, a night without the moon--the fluorescent lamp of the sky—not even the stars, the blinking eyes of Heaven.

(1) It was pitch dark, ink dark, coal dark…:  累赘！“pitch,” “ink,”“coal”这三个形容词抵消了互相的含义。写作忌讳形容词堆砌，特别是互相抵消意义的形容词堆砌，而且这个堆砌逻辑上也有问题，pitch dark了以后，就不能ink dark或者 coal dark了。这并不是说不可以连用几个形容词，但连用的形容词，都要有自己的作用。

(2) a night without the moon--the fluorescent lamp of the sky—not even the stars, the blinking eyes of Heaven：标点符号有问题。第一，两个破折之间是同位语，假如我们把这两个破折号内的短语都取消掉以后，那最后一个排列成分not even the stars, the blinking eyes of Heaven就跟前面的那个排列成分a night without the moon粘在了一起，期间没有任何标点符号，这是绝对不允许的；第二，两个同位语the fluorescent lamp of the sky和the blinking eyes of Heaven没有必要用不同的标点符号（一个破折号，一个逗号），从平行（修辞语）这个角度看，应该一致。

(3) 这里的heaven要表达的是“天空”的意思，但Heaven大写时不是“天空”，是“上帝”的意思。表示“天空”，heaven要小写，或者用定冠词加-s.

第二句： The overcast sky threatened with a heavy downpour:  

(1) 这是一个没有必要的非完整句（sentence fragment）。

(2)而且逻辑有问题！雨不会朝天上下，只有天会把雨下到其它地方去，所以不是天受到威胁。

第三句：The sullen weather sometimes seemed very friendly to certain individuals whose job was outside the law. 

(1) 从意思层面看，这个句子的前面要有一个but表转折。

(2) weather不可数，表抽象，前面不要定冠词，但因为有个形容词，它前面可加一个不定冠词。

(3) The sullen weather sometimes seemed very friendly to certain individuals表达不力，因为sullen weather已经sullen，是不变的，它对任何人都一个样，只不过不同的人对它有不同的感受而已。原文想表达的意思是But a sullen weather is not necessarily a bad thing to certain individuals . （我说的是原文想表达的类似意思，不是说就应该这样写。）

(4)…whose job was outside the law什么意思，看不懂？是不是who were engaged in unlawful doings?

虽然，海外逸士仅仅一个三句话的段落里就有这么多错，这并不是说他不可以进行汉译英翻译。写作与翻译是个辩证过程，练习写作可以促进翻译，练习翻译可以促进写作，是互惠的。其次，人非圣贤，谁没有错？！
