1960年，中国人的预期寿命是36.3岁，与1949年〔35岁）基本相同。不同的是,1949年中国处于战争状态，1960年则发生了大饥荒。
从上面刚果的例子，我们知道预期寿命也有随时间推移而下降的可能，尤其是在战争和饥荒发生的时候。进一步了解中国确实如此。据联合国资料，20，30年代中国人的预期寿命，比1949和1960年高！

根据以上历史数据，如果没有饥荒，估计1960年的预期寿命应该在47岁以上。到1970年，中国的预期寿命增加到了61.7岁。除去60年饥荒的 因素，真正的增长最多在15岁左右。这15岁的增长，应该有10岁左右是使用抗生素的功劳（《中国新闻周刊》系列报 告：http://bbs.wenxuecity.com/kxtw/19123.html）。
