PHD degree/training actually hurts one's business sense and money making capability:
1. phd trains people to be very focused to the point of being tunnel-visioned/narrow-minded;
2. research trains people to constantly explore new things and move to the next hot topics, instead of exploiting known method and stay on a tried and true path. business success / money making frequently is just repeating ONE line of business that is working until it is not working any more, ie extract the last drop of oil / blood from the bone.
3. once you received the degree after years of hard work to the point of torture, you feel you have too much to give up, not realizing cost is sunk, and it is best to move on.
4. with the degree, you are not likely to be homeless, and are not cornered enough to turn the creative enterpreneural spark into blazing fire. In that sense, PHD/tenure/professorship is like chicken rib.
5. academia is very territorial. Folks are overly protective of their own ideas and research outcome, and are not good at cooperating with others.
Having said all these, getting a PHD/post-doc is a choice, and it tends to attract conservative people who has low risk tolerance to begin with.
just my 2c.
