爱德华·诺顿（Eward Norton）生于1969年8月18日，毕业于耶鲁大学。他自幼即对戏剧表演兴趣浓厚。1996 年， 理查德·基尔(Richard Gere)要主演的一部好莱坞法庭悬疑片《一级恐惧》需要找一个男演员演对手戏。这个角色本来要请里奥纳多·迪卡普里奥来演，但他拒绝了。正在理查德·基尔要放弃此片时，诺顿出现了。他从2000名候选者中脱颖而出，这在当时的好莱坞都掀起了轰动。不久后他就得到伍迪·艾伦(Woody Allen)《大家都说我爱你》(1996)和《性书大亨》(1996)中的角色。诺顿还因在《一级恐惧》中的出色演出获得金球奖最佳男配角奖和奥斯卡最佳男配角奖的提名。1998年影片《美国历史X》中他的精湛演技为他赢来奥斯卡最佳男主角的再次提名。诺顿1999年拍了《搏击俱乐部》，2000年又首次做导演执导《保持信仰》。
