1937年8月13日，日军进攻上海，中国军队奋起抵抗，展开了中国抗战史上著名的八一三淞沪保卫战战斗，历时三月，杀伤日军六万余人，后终因敌强我弱，我大场放线被突破。守军国民革命军第八十八师 第524团， 团长陆军中校谢晋元，奉命率部队掩护主力转移，于十月二十六日进驻上海四行仓库，誓死固守，孤军激战四昼夜，打退日寇10多次进攻，毙敌二千余，伤敌无数.
这次保卫战的成功，重新振奋了因淞沪会战受挫而下降的中国军民的士气，在中国抗战史上写下光辉的一页。
