同学 - Mainland China has some definition other than the traditi

To me, it means "classmates", or "people going to the same school".

However, obviously this word is widely used in Mainland China style writing to mean a lot more thing. I have read someone describe her beloved pet dog being XX 同学, in a loving way. However, obviously 同学 is being used here in a far less positive way. This is rather confusing - that many Chinese words lost their true meanings.
