I usually pulled up the details under Expedia, for example, then went to airline own site - Using by SCHEDULE, (not by Prices) and selected the particular flights to see how was the pricing.
About 50% of the time the prices matched w/ what were available on Expedia. Then I booked on airline site. The other 50% of time, paid the $5.00 and booked on Expedia (or Travelocity).
