but if anything happened, you are fully reponsible for any damage you caused - because you VIOLATE the rental contract, no insurance would cover you. This is the risk one should look at, not the physical risk. Mind you, if you stuck, you are responsible to get the car out - rental car company would not come to rescue you. If you think you can afford upward of several thousands in case such thing happened, then by all means, consider it no risk at all.

Again, I emphasize weather - the weather plays a big role in many roads in Hawaii. If it is in rainy season, or after several days of downpour, then it is definitely not a smart choice to drive the loop.

Yes, it depends - whether you decide the risk is worth taking - driving on unpaved roads that SPECIFICALLY STATED "FORBIDDEN" ON YOUR RENTAL CAR CONTRACT - some people would take the chance and come out OK, then would brag about it and continuously take the similar chance, until one day the luck runs out. Or they always come out OK and laugh at those who dont take the unnecessary risk.

It is a matter of personal choice. I prefer to point out some items that people should include in their decision-making process. The choice is of course, entirely up to each individual.

Personally, there are occasions we would take the risk despite what is said on rental car contract - such as driving on unpaved road (Sugancane planation road) to a remote State Park on Kauai to view Na Pali Coast up close on the other side - other than big potholes on the road, there is really not much risk to take if weather has been dry for over a week. The loop of Road to Hana - the risk is somewhat bigger than that of the dirt road we took at Kauai.

BTW, Road to Hana is actually quite BORING, after the first couple hours - as the sceneries do not change much - greens after greens after greens.... It is not hard to us, it is just becoming quite boring and you have a hard decision to make - press on all the way to Hana or turn back? Of course, as I said in the first reply, at least drive it ONCE, then one can decide whether it is worth it. In our subsequent trips to Maui, we had not thought about Hana at all. In fact Maui now has become our LEAST FAVORABLE island in all the islands. It was quite touristy to begin with, now it is getting to an unbearable level to us, we literally have the feeling of "Paradise Lost", kind of sad.

North Shore of Maui actually is much more difficult to drive in several sections, yet it is all paved, and therefore there is no restriction on rental car contract.

The Saddle Road on Hawaii (Big Island), probably is THE most difficult road to drive in all Hawaii Islands and it definitely needs a 4-wheel to negotiate it SAFELY.
