Rio de Janeiro, Iguazu Fall, Amazon River should be high on your list if you are first time visiter. Rio is such a vibrant city. I had so much fun there. Beautiful beaches, mouth-watering food, fancy shows, exciting nightclubs, shopping…you name it. The usual tourist spots include Corcovado Mountain with the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, Guanabara beach, Ipanema beach. Don’t miss the Carnival-style samba show at Platforma. I recommend you to stay in Ipanema or Leblon, where I was told are safer. There is a night club at Ipanema, called Melt, I guarantee you will have fun (with locals). People are pretty friendly. I feel quite safe considering I was alone most of the time. But stay alert, better safe than sorry. I made some Brazilian friends who told me the most beautiful beaches are on the northeast coast line close to the Equator. However, in those areas, you’d better speak Portuguese, so I was told.
