visited Cairns a few days in Aug 2003.

Depends what you want to do the most, whether you are a scuba diver, a sailor, or just a tourist seeking beautiful beaches, natural beauty ... your ways of "play" will be all different.

FWIW, Cairns itself does not have beach at all, despite it is the gateway to Great Barrier Reef.
The nearby towns have beaches, but not anything spectacular. If your goal is for stunning beaches, then this is not the place for you.

It is a paradise though, for the scuba divers and the sailors. Snokellors may get more satisfaction in Hawaii than here.

Also, summertime in Cairns or the North coast of Queensland, is very hot and muggy. Remember they are on the South Hemisphere - so our winter is their summer.
