I don't think there is any absolute need for any kind of car or SUV.
I drove an old camry across CA+AZ+NM area for twice (including a trip to Grand Canyon) and met no problem at all.
Bigger cars always give you more space. If you get off from air plane, it is unlikely you will have a lot of carry.
If you've got the money, spend as needed.
