There is productive 斗争 and counterproductive 斗争.

“从我做起，从现在做起” does not mean the action will not affect others. It is actually a more product action then directly pushing others around for change.

There is a famous quote from Mahatma Gandhi that says exactly the same thing: to be the change you want to see in the world.
