The Knickerbockers’ Carmelo Anthony played 29 minutes Sunday against the Philadelphia 76ers. He scored 22 points. But New York lost 106-94 to the Sixers. That’s not unusual. On Feb. 21, 2011, the Knicks traded virtually half their roster to Denver for Anthony, who longed for the bright lights of New York. Those Knicks were 28-26 before the trade. The rest of the year, they went 14-13 with him, 0-1 without him (Anthony sat out the regular-season finale) and then were swept in a first-round playoff series by the Celtics. This season, Anthony has missed 10 games. The Knicks are 6-4 in those games. Anthony has played 31 games; the Knicks are 12-19 in those games. OK, so let’s review. The Knicks are 28-26 before Anthony’s arrival. Since the trade, New York is 32-41 overall, including 6-5 when he doesn’t play and 26-36 when he does. Some other factors are involved. The Jeremy Lin emergence. Injuries to other players. The transition of a roster overhaul. But clearly, Carmelo Anthony serves as a warning. Trading for a superstar is not a panacea. Sometimes it works. Like in Miami, which added LeBron James and Chris Bosh to Dwyane Wade. And Boston, which traded for Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen to go with Paul Pierce. But basketball still requires cohesion. Still requires teamwork. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday. Much talk about Dwight Howard and Pau Gasol and Rajon Rondo. But be careful when adding superstars. Improving the talent base is only part of the equation. The Knicks clearly are not a better team with Carmelo Anthony than they were or even are without him.Carmelo Anthony: Knicks play better without him
