In China, an athlete with his caliber, is usually quickly labelled as "elite" sportsman with celebritory status in very young age. But in the States, most athletes have gone through up-and-downs tons of times from a junior time to adult age. They have to keep on fighting to gain better positions in their (career) advancement process.
