it is not easy esp if there is a snow storm

see my post about the young engaged couple from AirForce Academy at Colorado Spring, they perished at a location that was no more than 20-30 miles from the main roads.

The very key is, DONT TAKE SHORTCUTS, AND HARDLY TRAVELLED ROADS IN WINTER TIME.

Called us chicken, we went to Lake Tahoe one year in early Spring, April no less. We were in the central valley, driving towards Tahoe. Weather report channels keep reporting Tahoe area was hit by a late Spring snow storm and many roads would most likely be closed. Almost every route on our original plan was reported in danger of closure - as they were all mountain routes. We ended up detour towards Sacremento area and took the more major road to Tahoe. Even so, there was a roadblock set up by Hwy Petrol just before entering Tahoe, the police inspected each car's tires to determine if the car was safe enough to be driven inside. Our rental was deemed safe as it was equipped with All-Weather tires. There were cars being turned back and many people bought Snow Chains at nearby gas stations. Better be safe than sorry.
