Meaning: Horse dung.

Background:

This American slang term for horse dung or droppings originated in the mid 20th

century. Clearly, the allusion is to the appearance of horse droppings which, in

shape and size at least, although hardly in colour or odour, resemble apples.

An atheist went into a bar and told everyone there was no God.

"Let me ask you something," the bartender said. "Animals that eat grass don't

have the same dung. Sheep excrete little hard pellets. Cows pass big liquidy

pies. Horses defecate moist kiwi-sized balls. They all eat grass but have

different droppings. Why do you think that is?"

"I have no idea" said the atheist.

"How can you talk about God when you don't know sh*t?"

[First heard the joke from Garrison Keilor.]
