During Christmas holidays, we went on a short trip to a nearby college town. One night we ate out at a restaurant. We sat in the outdoor area. One guy passed by us and said Hi to us. I said hi back to him. To my surprise, he was so excited like he was shocked that someone actually said hi back to him. He praised me with such an enthusiasm that I felt a bit uncomfortable. He said: I'm a black guy, and you said hi to me! I told him skin colors don't matter to me. He was so appreciative that he went on and on praising me. Haha, I didn't know how to respond to that kind of overreacting. Finally the waitress had to come out to tell him to leave us alone.
A simple hi shows someone that he/she is being noticed by others. That might make that person feel good about her/himself.
