Discuss: 20-mile-trip

Please advise for the following:

1: Can "20-mile-trip" be used as a noun combination? or is it supposed to be "20-mile trip"?
2. I also do not like the expression "hang down", but was unable to find a more accurate "expression". Any suggestions?
