Focus Media Swings To 1Q Profit On Broad Top-Line Growth

Focus Media Holding Ltd. (FMCN) swung to a first-quarter profit, topping analysts' expectations, on across-the-board top-line growth and wider gross margins.

China's largest digital-media company has seen results improve of late, and has now posted four consecutive quarters in the black after a string of six straight losses, helped by growing revenue and an improving advertising market in China.

Focus posted a profit of $20.5 million, or 15 cents per American depositary share, compared to a prior-year loss of $954,000, or a penny per ADS. Excluding stock-based compensation and other impacts, earnings per ADS grew to 30 cents from 16 cents. Revenue jumped 51% to $146.6 million.

Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected a profit of 27 cents per ADS on revenue of $135 million.

Gross margin widened to 54.7% from 49.8%.

Focus Media also forecast current-quarter earnings of $54 million to $56 million. Wall Street expected about $52 million.

The company's ADSs rose 1.3% to $32 in after-hours trading. They are up 44% this year through Tuesday's close.
