你喜欢还是憎恨听凄美的音乐？
著名音乐教授大卫•休伦(David Huron)研究出了一种理论。他用塞缪尔•巴伯（Samuel Barber）的弦乐四重奏(String Quartet)的第二乐章《柔板》（Adagio for Strings）来验证这一理论。
他说享受凄美音乐的人感受到的是催乳素（prolactin）的安慰效果。催乳素是一种同怀孕和哺乳期相关的荷尔蒙。但当悲伤或哭泣时人体也同样能释放出这种荷尔蒙。他推测不能忍受悲伤音乐的人的身体不能释放出足够的催乳素。
这项研究采集了人从听凄美音乐，到不听音乐，然后再听欢快音乐时的血样，测量出在正常情况下人体催乳素的含量，以及在听凄美音乐时人体释放出的催乳素的量。
他说催乳素的效果有如大自然母亲用她那温暖的双臂拥抱着我们，安慰我们说，“没关系的，一切都会好的...”。当听悲伤音乐的人并没有任何心理上实质性的悲痛时，催乳素产生的安慰效果能让人感觉相当良好。
