A Question on Mortgage Application

To get better mortgage rate, should I submit multiple mortgage applications to differnt lenders? I heard that too many credit checkings in a short period of time could have a negative impact on my credit score. If that is the case, should I only submit one mortgage application? Thanks in advance!
