Peng was luckly enough to work under Mao: he was not stripped off all the power even after the severe political incident and he was later even re-appointed by Mao to lead a strategic national project. If he had lived in the so-called "Open Policy" era, he would have been stripped off all the power and put under house arrest till his death like Zhao Ziyang or thrown to prison like Bo Xilai, who just had some fresh ideas different from the main stream and never tried to challenge any top leader face to face. If Bo had insulted any top leader like what Pend did, he might have been sentenced to death.
