If Soviet Union did not intervene, Chinese army would be defeated entirely. At later stage of the conflicts since General Ridgeway took over, US did not lose battle anymore. It was because Chinese army did not have enough ammunition,  food, clothese. Instead of running away when Chinese army had advantage in numbers, US units were ordered to dig in and killed as many Chinese soldiers as possible while waiting extra combat troops to come.  Chinese army could not afford prolonged battles since it does not have enough supplies. A lot of soldiers died of malnutrition and coldness.
