Lin broke the balance between Zhou and Mao in May 1966 and caused huge damage to Zhou's camp. Zhou had the force to beat Mao, but he did not want to bear the name of "Overpowered Subordinate." Zhou could not tolerate any betrayal to him and his camp. Lin must die after his doing in May 1966, the only matter is time.
