What had China done to Vietnam

in the invasion in 1979?  Literally looted and burned down every village and every city PLA passed and occupied, left nothing. A friend of mine who is a military historian (american) told me that. 

If China is strong enough and has a chance to initiate a war on Japan, most likely it would do the same to Japan.  Similar culture, value, and similar mentality.
