Japanese train stations, but you dont see any trash eventhough they have all kind of food stalls at train stations, from the major Shinkansan to the local trains ... We saw Japanese kept their used lunch boxes, drink bottles, newspapers etc with them when they get off, until they find the recycle bins.
We have been in Japan twice - once was 20+ years ago, then again, spring of last year. Not much changed, except more crowded, more modernized, more skyscrappers, despite their economy is in recession the past 15 years !!! And things are still so so so expensive.
The JR Pass (Japanes Rail Pass) is a very very good deal, and probably the only good deal for foreign visitors. We used it to travel the whole Japan, from Tokyo to Hokkaido and then down South to Kyusho. Excellent train services - extremely clean, even for the lowest class local train, extremely punctual, extremely convenient schedules between major cities ... Shinkensan is just a modern marvel ...
The night train has comfortable seats that almost fully recline. You can travel from Tokyo to Hakata by night train and save a day's time (and a night of hotel cost).
