ETF should be called ETMF (Exchange Traded Mutual Fund).

ETF is mutual funds.  The simple difference between mutual fund and ETF is when you can trade them.  You can trade ETFs during the market operation hours between 9:30am to 4pm New York time.  Mutual funds are traded after the market close after 4pm, usually from 5pm to 6:30pm.
