after submitting I-407 to the VO, the VO will return the I-407 to you after they approve it (stamp or make a note on it). This I-407 is considered the proof of green card abandonment (receipt). You need to bring this I-407 with you when you enter US using a non-immigration visa (e.g. B-2, etc.). Also, need to provide the copy of this I-407 if you apply for the green card again in the future.
