Work out w/your boss

This is an issue of ethic and interpersonal skills. Legally speaking, you can quit any time. Your second H1B petition approval will override your first one. However, since you are working in academic field you might bump into your first boss again sometime later. It depends on people's personality, so you'd better be frank to your first boss and work out something.
