It is very easy and simple. I did it before. You just get admission (of course it will issue you a I-20), then you fill out the form I-539 and mail it to USCIS service center. you can check the processing date from the uscis website. I checked days ago, if for Vermont service center, it takes almost 1 week to process the (change to F1 visa) case. check it yourself.
