You don't need to go together, your wife and you can do it sperately. You may also try to do your finiger prints early. I went to the local office one month in advance (I went there for another issue, just wanted to try some luck), I showed the finger print notice and they did it without asking a question. But I guess it depends which local office you are going to visit. My nearby office is Buffalo.
