You are right once you have a greencard, the INS cannot keep track of when you leave the country as easily as before. You don't need an I-94 anymore. You don't have to fill out one when you enter the country, nor will the INS ask to see it or to take it when you leave the country. This is how greencard holders who work overseas can maintain their status by coming back to the U.S. once every six months rather than living in the U.S. for at least six months out of a year--- the INS only knows when you enter the country, but not when you leave the country.
