bought wrong ticket, help!!!

Hi:

My parents will visit me this June. I bought tickets from united airline:
Shanghai->Vancouver->Boston.

I was told today that they also need Canada visa to be able to board at Vancouver.

Is that true? If it is, then what should I do?

Is it easy to apply Canada visa for my parents? How?
