Sorry to hear about that. For your condition, safety check is very possible.If you are lucky enough, probably you can get visa soon. The 3rd country isn't a sure thing, if you are rejected, you can not come back to US and must go to China directly. Now people say the visa check in China is quicker than before. I don't have the first hand information. If you must go home, probably it is better to apply visa in China with as much as document you can prepare. Good luck to you.
