you need to use I-539 and supporting material (your wife's I-20 and financial support document etc.) go to BCIS (New name for INS) website to find instruction. The processing time for I-539 change to F-1 is about 2 to 3 mo for Texas Service Center. You can also find the info for your particular service center. If you can read and understand English, you don't need a lawyer for such a simple application. Good luck,
