You don't really need to change status to go to school. In some schools, you can even pay in-state tuition but you need to check with your school to see if they have it. Unless you want to apply for OPT in the future or receive assitantship, then you need to be on F1. It takes almost like forever to get your F1 transfer approved now. Go to the ISO of your school for help, they should have a checklist regarding the documents you should include for petition.
