When I applied I-140, I have no idea for immigration and retained a lawyer. However, I found I need prepare everything by myself and he just make few changes in my petition letter. The lawyer did mothing with the reference letters. Based on my case, I do beleive that most of lawyers just take money and pay little attention for their clients. Please remember, they still change a client $1000-2000 even the client's case was denied. It is reasonable to charge a client $500 before approval based on their service.
