If I were you, I would ask for three references from his past business dealings. One would be his partner/peer, second his superior/banker/investor, third his customer. You should tell him candidly that this will be a big move/decision for you and you want to make sure that you have all the information you need. Please remember this is not an ordinary job position. It is similar to get married! If his business practice has any potential liabilities, being a partner of his can get you into it. So, check it out carefully and be very open with him about it.
