President Obama April 21, 2014
White House
Washington DC
Dear Mr. President,
On the eve of your trip to Tokyo, it seems appropriate to brief you our concern on US position as it relates to the Diaoyu Islands issue.
We believe the current US position, disclosed by several high-ranking officials and generals in your administration, has been unduly influenced, swayed and guided or misguided by the Japanese government. It is a classic case of “Tail wagging the dog”.
This US position, if remain unchanged, would seriously damage our national interests and in worst case, could jeopardize the lives and welfare of the American people.
Let us elaborate:
To extend US-Japan Security Pact to Diaoyu Islands, a territory that is not a part of Japan as US has asserted time and again, is, in our opinion, illogical, unreasonable and facetious to the extreme. It means our nation is obligated to engage in wars to defend a piece of real estate that does not even belong to Japan, a former enemy nation that started the Second World War.
The fallacy is none too apparent.
Strangely, in this nation of ours where democracy reigns supreme, no referendum, no public opinion survey, nor debate of any sort was ever made on the subject.
Neither the news media, nor the academics, nor the numerous “Think Tanks” have ever given this issue the consideration it is due. The gravity of the issue warrants your immediate attention. The American people should have a say on this matter. Hence this letter at this critical time.
The U.S. can easily defuse this time bomb and honorably get out of the present dilemma by restoring the status of the islands to that of the pre-Nixon era.
As things stand now, with unconditional US backing, Japan will not have any incentive to resolve this issue with China in an ami-
cable and peaceful manner. Remember, as a founding member of the UN, the US is committed to peaceful resolution of all international territorial disputes.
Further, unconditional siding with Japan on this issue will very probably force China, however reluctantly, to close rank with Russia to the detriment of US interests worldwide.
In the history of mankind, wars were often triggered by issues seemingly minor or insignificant at the time. In this time and age, conventional warfare could easily lead to nuclear exchange with catastrophic consequences to mankind.
Mr. President, as the top elected official of this great nation, your first and foremost duty is the safety and welfare of the American people. No foreign nation’s affair should, under any circumstances, exceed the national interest of the United States of America.
Sincerely,
William S. C. Lee, Yi-xia Xin, Pei-xin Cong,
Bing Liu, Dawson Tso, Program Hosts
