Branded PCs/Laptop use BIOS to activate Vista or XP. Imagine this: If the key is real, and the OEM has to hire technicians to manually enter the long key, how much time/money OEM is going to waste. All the PCs from the same vendor share the same key. If you don't believe this, try magic keyfinder.

It is possible that your laptop is "Vista ready", meaning that the BIOS already has a SLIC table. Therefore you can use the Vista install DVD of the same brand for your laptop. But this is not guaranteed. Some older laptop models still only have SLP, no SLIC.

Now let's go back to your original issue. By default, XP doesn't support SATA drive. You have to slipstream chipset driver into the XP to create a custom XP install CD. Vista includes SATA support. No extra driver is needed.
