Being appreciative is a good thing. But by treating them with a meal, you were off-loading the burden you felt from your shoulders onto the meal. Such action might quantify your value in their eyes.

Your attitude should be: they should feel honored to lend a hand, because what you'll be able to help them with in the future would be much bigger.
