Being a nurse for 8 years in Canada, I have learned that the communication skills are the most important things for nursing, whether you communicate with your patients or with your co-workers. First, be confident and assertive at work! If you feel they always assign you heavier patients, then you have to speak up in front of your co-workers. You have to fight for the fairness for yourself, no one will give it to you by default. Second, improve English pronunciation. For nursing, 99% part of our job is about communicating in English. Don't be afraid of those 20 something Caucasian young nurses, you can be a better nurse than them. Third, make some good friends at work, especially with those visible minority nurses. I know at my work unit, the visible minority nurses are actually the majority, giving us more power!
