I am afraid it is not normal

Cause the better you treat your subordinate, the higher the chance they want to hurt you. They will never appreciate your good will or realize that you are trying to help them or develop them.

I don't want to rule out exceptions, maybe there is slight variaiton from country to country, but generally this is true which is a very sad fact for any inheritantly kind person like myself.

Almost all manager will realize this soon or later, or will have to face the brutal fact that he/she is betrayed. Knowing this, it won't be difficult to understand why people always say "don't expect your boss to treat you well"
