research value creation

recently, our research center demands us to calculate the value creation for your works, does everybody have similar experience ? we works at research center of a big steel company, just provide the technical support or new model to our plants, how to calculate how much value we create ? it seems back to China when I left my old technology center which requested us to ask money from the steel plants, it is so weired. never image we need to do the same thing again in USA. BTW, our big big big CEO is from India.
