In the West, value individuals more than groups. The typical employee doesn't see his or her identify as being defined by the organization. The communication focuses on the writer's and reader's needs rather than on those of the two organizations. Writers use the pronoun/rather than "we". Letters are addressed to the principal and signed by the writer.

Other cultures, particularly in Asia, value groups more than individuals. The typical employee sees himself or herself first as a member of the organization rather than as an individual who works there. In communication, they tend to use "we" rather than "I".
