The key is to book first as they are all cancellable - then watch price fluctuation and if they are cheaper than your reservation - cancel and rebook.
That happened on both the YS and Anchorage lodgings on that particular trip in Sept '05.
Our Best Western Anchorage booking for 2 nights (pre Alaska SB cruise) went from $99 to $79 - that is CHEAP in AK standard. 3 weeks after changing bookings, the hotel was sold out. By check-in, we were upgraded to the new wing with a gigantic room because the room type we booked were all occupied (our flight arrived 6:30pm and by the time they picked us up and drove to hotel, it was 7:15pm).
Similar situation happened to another Best Western at West Yellowstone 3 weeks later. This time we arrived almost 9pm but since we had a confirmed reservation, they put us up at the new wing also.
To add ice on the cake, Best Western chain was running a promo to earn bonus miles with AA - I got 2500 AA miles on top of the regular miles earned. :-)
