President Truman reads an award citation to General Douglas MacArthur
following their meeting at Wake Island.
In 1951 Congress investigated whether President Harry S. Truman acted within his powers when he fired General Douglas MacArthur––and concluded that he did.
In summarizing his 52-year Army career, MacArthur waxed eloquent, concluding his speech by recalling a line from a West Point barracks song from his school days: “'Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.' And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away—an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty.”
